generator stumble

Unread postby highwaystar on Mon Sep 07, 2015 4:50 pm

Did some boondocking this past weekend and while using generator it runs pretty well with only a slight shudder every once in awhile, but when using ac it really gets bogged down. every few minutes stumbles fairly bad before it catches itself.
Is the original onan 6000watt.

Before I tried delving into troubleshooting I thought I would get some input on normal operation.

Does the A/C work normally if plugged into shore power ?
A 6K Onan should power an A/C with room to spare. Also how many cycles is the generator running out ? Have to put a Hz meter on it ? The hard start capacitor could be bad on the a/c unit.

I replaced the A/C unit a couple months ago. It works good plugged in. The Onan will power the a/c, lights, tv but stumbles every few minutes. I will have to check how to test the output of the generator.
